Young Stewards Program 2011

Colleague Kathleen Gilmore facilitates the Million Dollar Challenge at the Young Stewards Program on September 11, 2011

A Young Stewards program participant explains her team's decisions and its results, for the Million Dollar Challenge.

The Young Stewards Program incorporates a series of activities that introduce teens to the fundamentals of basic money skills as well as the concept of human capital-- personal experiences, networks, values and traditions-- as a resource for creating opportunities for themselves.

Activities:

The first part of the Young Stewards Program engages teens in The Million Dollar ChallengeTM, a game in which participants tackle the challenge of stewarding a significant gift from fictitious grandparents.  The purpose of this game is to introduce basic money skills as tools for successfully stewarding wealth.

The next session helps teens to build a tangible portfolio of their human capital and explores how those assets can be leveraged throughout life.

A budgeting exercise in the final portion of the program challenges teens to consider lifestyle options and to create a matching plan for managing income, helping them to understand the use of a budget and how to stay within one.
