Philanthropy

Philanthropy Resources

Many families wish to direct significant portions of their human, intellectual, and financial capital to philanthropic interests. Philanthropy often emerges as a primary value within a family group as one way of expressing gratitude for good fortune and as a means of giving back to society. Oftentimes, families pursue philanthropic endeavors that reflect their core beliefs about what will make the world a better place.

We assist families in developing their philanthropic goals and determining the most effective means of implementing them.  We begin this process with our Family Philanthropy Survey.  The survey encourages articulation of values in order to define the family's mission and purpose.  This communication process contributes to sound governance (decision making) practices for family leadership and is outlined by the steps provided below.

Family Philanthropy Survey Process:

Step 1:

Meet with the family leader to discuss the objectives of the survey
Step 2:

Design customized questions as needed

Step 3:

Communicate the plan for the survey to the individual family members who will be asked to participate
Step 4:

Administer the survey, either on-line via private password-protected email, or by hard copy.  Allow two weeks for participants to complete the survey
Step 5:

Analyze all results and prepare a written report, including recommendations to inform strategic planning
Step 6:

Conduct de-brief call to review the results and written report with the family leader

Step 7:
Facilitate a family meeting to present findings and discuss recommendations
